Water Softener Silky Hair

Water Softener Systems Enhance the Texture and Feel of Hair

Water Softener Systems

Water softener systems offer many household benefits due to their ability to effectively prevent the formation of soap scum. This difficult-to-clean substance can cloud glassware and dishes, coat fixtures and bathroom surfaces, damage laundered fabrics, clog plumbing systems, and cause the premature breakdown of water-using appliances. Most people are aware that a water softener system can make life easier and more pleasant throughout the whole house. But, did you know that it can also improve the texture and feel of your hair?

It’s true. By reducing the concentrations of calcium and magnesium in water, water softener systems help cleansing products produce rich, thick lathers. People who wash their hair with soft water are able to create more bubbles than they would with hard water. As a result, shampoos perform better by deeply penetrating each strand of hair to clean it more thoroughly. Additionally, a little product goes a long way. Because a very small amount of shampoo can produce a luxurious lather with soft water, much less is needed to properly cleanse the hair.

Soft water feels different, too. Water softener systems produce water that has a soft, slippery feel that leaves behind no residue. For this reason, some people who are accustomed to bathing with hard water might be inclined to “over rinse” the soft water from their hair, mistaking its silky texture for residual shampoo. This is unnecessary. In fact, the “clean” feel of hard water can actually damage hair by drying it out, making it brittle, lifeless, and dull. What’s more, the white calcium deposits that build up around shower heads and faucets can also build up in hair. This can lead to:

  • A dry, flaky scalp
  • Hair breakage
  • Thinning hair due to blocked follicles

Of course, hard water is perfectly safe for hair washing, so using soft water for this purpose is a matter of personal preference. Some people choose to counteract the negative effects of hard water on their hair by utilizing special products, such as clarifying shampoos and deep conditioning treatments. Keep in mind, though, that soft, silky hair is just one of the myriad benefits that water softener systems can provide.
