What is Hard Water vs. Soft Water?

What is Hard Water vs. Soft Water?

What is Hard Water vs. Soft Water?

Hard water refers to water that has a substantial concentration of calcium and magnesium. Soft water, on the other hand, has very low concentrations of these minerals. The process of water becoming hard is a fairly simple one. While rainwater is initially soft, once it hits the earth, seeps into the ground, and comes into contact with limestone, the water dissolves the limestone. Limestone contains calcium and magnesium that also get dissolved, which stays in the water and “hardens” it. Although this sounds innocent enough, once water becomes hard, it travels through your city’s pipes or lands in your well water. From there, the hard water ends up in your home, where it can negatively impact your daily life. To get a better idea of the opposing effects of hard water vs. soft water, consider the following:

  • Soft water lathers more easily than hard water, which can help you save money because you won’t have to use as much soap
  • Hard water can shorten the lifespan of your water-using appliances, such as your dishwasher and washing machine
  • Unlike hard water, which has drying elements, soft water leaves your skin and hair feeling silky and moisturized
  • Hard water can result in limescale buildup in your pipes, reducing the water pressure in your faucets

If you’ve noticed yourself combatting the negative effects of hard water and are ready to experience life with soft water in your home, then RainSoft can help.
